The City of Brighton is working to determine the material of water service lines in homes and businesses built before 1960. This is to ensure the delivery of safe drinking water, protect your health, and comply with new state and federal drinking water standards aimed at replacing lead service lines nationwide. The City’s drinking water contains no lead when it leaves the city’s water treatment plant. However, lead can be present in plumbing materials, such as faucets and pipes, inside your home. Our water treatment process has been optimized to control any release of lead from piping and plumbing materials on its way to you.
This summer Brighton has contracted with Environmental Works, Inc. to core drill/pothole and survey approximately 350 properties randomly selected throughout the city. The contractors dig a small hole above the water service line and visually inspect the pipe. After documentation is collected, the hole is filled and the surface returned to pre-existing conditions.
As of Aug. 25, we have inspected 270 of the 350 properties and know that approximately 89 percent of all water service lines for Brighton homes and businesses are lead-free. We are hoping to close all investigations by the end of the summer.
If we determine your water service line contains lead, we will contact you directly to discuss replacement options. If lead materials are identified in any portion of the water delivery system, we will work in partnership with our customers to replace these materials.
If you have questions, or if your property was built before 1960, please contact us by emailing lead@brightonco.gov or text/call 720-925-9486 to confirm the material of your service line. The City of Brighton has created an online map at Brightonco.gov/lead to track the progress. Brighton is dedicated to reducing lead risk and keeping our community safe. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation during this project.
