Providing safe and reliable water
The Utilities Department’s mission is to ensure the public health and safety of our community by providing safe and reliable water, wastewater and storm drainage services to the residents of the City of Brighton.
The Department operates under six separate Divisions, or functional units, required for the utility to maintain a high level of service and ensure sustainable operational practices. Each of the Divisions has its own set of budgeted expenses. The Divisions are: Administration, Engineering, Stormwater & Environmental, Water Resources, Water Treatment, and Utility Maintenance and Operations.
The City of Brighton Utilities department currently operates a water treatment facility that utilizes two treatment processes. The City is in the process of building a new water treatment and softening plant slated to become operational in early 2027. The City does not operate a wastewater treatment facility but does own and operate the sewer collection system. Wastewater is treated by two separate treatment providers: Town of Lochbuie (east portion of the City) and Metro Water Recovery (west portion of the City). The City of Brighton has a stormwater discharge permit issued by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to discharge untreated stormwater runoff to the South Platte River.
