[ARCHIVED] Brighton police arrest 32-year-old suspected of felony animal cruelty

The Brighton Police Department has filed a felony animal cruelty case with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, resulting in charges against 32-year-old Jose Gordillo. The accepted charges are as follows:

COUNT 1: AGGRAVATED CRUELTY TO ANIMALS, C.R.S. 18-9-202(1.5)(B)(I) (F4) {28023}
COUNT 2: ASSAULT IN THE THIRD DEGREE, C.R.S. 18-3-204(1)(A) (M1) {02038}

The charges stem from an incident on Oct. 29, when officers responded to a reported disturbance in the 200 block of Balsam Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Gordillo had killed a cat and then assaulted another male before fleeing the scene. He was subsequently located in the 400 block of North Main Street and taken into custody.

“Acts of cruelty toward animals have no place in Brighton,” said Police Chief Matt Domenico. “Our officers are deeply committed to protecting the most vulnerable. We will continue to share information about felony animal cruelty cases in our city and work to hold offenders accountable.”

The Brighton Police Department encourages residents to be vigilant and report any acts of violence or unusual behavior involving animals by calling 303-288-1535 or 911 in emergency situations. Community awareness and involvement are essential in protecting animals from harm.

Under Colorado laws, the arrest and filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual committed a crime. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
