BPD Citizens Police Academy
WHY?
We are committed to the concept of community oriented policing, which is a collaboration between police and community members where the police no longer are the sole guardians of law and order. We encourage all members of our community to become active allies in the efforts to enhance the safety and quality of our neighborhoods.
For this to be possible, we will focus on creating a safe environment to foster true dialogue so we can listen, learn and grow with our residents. We are proud of our successes here in Brighton through partnerships and quality service to our community, and we hope our Community Police Academy will help foster strong relationships with those we serve.

Academy members must be at least 18 years of age. Preference is given to applicants that live or work in the City of Brighton, however, everyone is encouraged to apply. Applicants will undergo a criminal history and other background checks. Those found to have a criminal history will be individually evaluated as to the appropriateness of their attendance in the academy. Any individual found to have a felony conviction will be denied attendance. Any applicant that fails to disclose prior arrests for petty offenses, misdemeanors, or felonies will be eliminated from the application process.
After all the requirements are satisfied and an evaluation is completed, confirmation will be sent to all invited applicants. A liability waiver release must be completed at the beginning of the first session. Participants are asked to give a serious commitment to the full 10-week course. Members who miss three classes will not be allowed to graduate.
The academy consists of a series of ten interactive sessions that are offered at no cost to participants. All the Community Police Academy Instructors are current employees and represent every facet of Brighton Police Department. Our objective is not to train you to be a police officer, but rather to give you an up-close look that will allow you to become an informed community member. - Victim Services Unit
- Co-Responder Program
- Use of Force
- Arrest Control
- Firearms Training
