Police Chief Southard
started in law enforcement as a reserve deputy with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. He began his career with the Brighton Police Department as a
police officer in 1988 and is currently the captain in charge of the Police Operations Division.
Chief Southard has worked as a patrol officer, detective, sergeant and lieutenant. As a sergeant he worked patrol as well as managing the Police Reserve
Unit, bicycle patrol, school resource officers, Field Training Program, and the Detective Division. As a Lieutenant he was the commander of the
department’s Mobile Field Force and Detective Division.
Chief Southard has been the recipient of a number of department awards including City of Brighton Supervisor of the Year, two police department Employee
of the Year awards, and several Distinguished Service awards. He holds a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University-Global
and is a 2008 graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
