[ARCHIVED] Police conduct liquor compliance checks

On Dec. 11, Brighton officers conducted compliance checks to ensure area businesses that sell liquor are actively preventing sales to minors.

Under-age buyers, working under the direct supervision of police officers, attempted to make purchases at each of Brighton’s 58 businesses which hold an active liquor license. 52 of the licensees, or approximately 90 percent, were found in compliance when they refused to sell alcohol to the minors. As a result of the checks, 6 people were cited for illegal sale of alcohol to a minor.

Community Resource Officer Anna Marie Cuney, who provides required training for servers who work at liquor-licensed establishments, was encouraged that the number of licensees who made a sale to the minor was down significantly from 2012, when 10 businesses failed the checks. Among other responsibilities, Cuney works to establish a cooperative relationship between police and licensees in combating the serious issue of under-age drinking.

Chief of Police Clint Blackhurst was pleased with the diligence of the establishments that refused to sell to the minors, but said the results demonstrate that this is an ongoing effort that must be continued to be addressed, not only by the police department but by the community as a whole.
