[ARCHIVED] Police Chief Southard announces retirement

After more than 34 years of dedicated law enforcement service, Chief Paul Southard has announced that he will retire from Brighton Police Department on October 15. Southard has served as police chief since July 2016.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the Brighton community for the last 34 years,” Chief Southard said. “I have been fortunate to work alongside the most dedicated, professional, and selfless men and women in law enforcement and I am confident they will continue to serve Brighton with the utmost integrity.”

Prior to his role as chief, Southard was the deputy chief of police, where he served as the commander of police operations and oversight for the department in the chief’s absence. He also served as a police captain, lieutenant, sergeant, detective and patrol officer for the Department.

Southard earned his bachelor’s degree in applied management from the National American University and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Colorado State University. He is also a graduate of the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command.

Southward has received numerous awards throughout his career including the 1994 and 1999 Police Employee of the Year, 1994 Lifesaving Award, 1998 Commendable Service Award, 2000 City Supervisor of the Year, 1994, 2002, 2004, 2011 Distinguished Service Award, and more.

City Manager Michael Martinez appointed Deputy Chief Matt Domenico to serve as interim police chief upon Chief Southard's retirement.
