[ARCHIVED] New state program offers water payment assistance to residents


Brighton residents seeking assistance with paying water bills can apply for the new Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). Administered by the Colorado Department of Human Services (DHS), the LIHWAP assistance program is federally funded and aims to help residents who are behind in their water bills.

In order to qualify for LIHWAP, residents must 

  • Complete the LEAP application and the LIHWAP addendum
  • Provide a copy of their water bill
  • Pay a water provider directly for either drinking water and/or sewer/waste water
  • Have a past due amount, service disconnected or about to be disconnected
  • Be approved for LEAP for the 2021-2022 season.

To apply for LEAP and LIHWAP go to Help applying for LEAP and LIHWAP is available 24/7 at the toll-free number 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435). Customers can also go to a local DHS Office to pick-up/drop-off an application.

There are no minimum or maximum benefits for LIHWAP. This program is first-come, first-serve. Deadline is on-going until LIHWAP funds run out.

Los residentes de Brighton que necesitan ayuda para pagar su factura del agua pueden llenar la solicitud para el nuevo programa “Low Income Household Water Assistance Program” (LIHWAP). Este programa es administrado por el Departamento de Colorado de Servicios Humanitarios y tiene el propósito de ayudar a los residentes que están batallando para pagar el agua. Los fondos de este programa vienen del gobierno federal. 

Para calificar para LIHWAP, el residente debe

  • Completar solicitud para el programa de “Low-Income Energy Assistance Program” (LEAP) junto con el adjunte de LIHWAP
  • Proveer copia de su factura del agua 
  • Pagar el agua directamente con el proveedor 
  • Estar atrasado con sus pagos de agua o tener su servicio del agua desconectado o a punto de ser desconectado
  • Ser aprobado para el programa LEAP para la temporada de 2021-2022. 

Para llenar la solicitud de LEAP y LIHWAP visite Ayuda con la solicitud de LEAP y LIHWAP está disponible las 24 horas, 7 días a la semana en el número gratuito 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435). Los solicitantes también pueden visitar una oficina local de DHS para obtener una solicitud o para entregar su solicitud. 

No hay cantidad mínima o máxima de beneficios para LIHWAP. Los fondos de este programa se distribuyen de acuerdo al orden en que se reciban las solicitudes.
