[ARCHIVED] City Council approves marijuana sales tax ballot question

elex2021_NF

On August 31, Brighton City Council voted 9-0 to approve a resolution to place a marijuana sales tax question on the ballot for the November 2, 2021 Election.

The resolution for marijuana sales would allow for the sale of retail marijuana and marijuana products within city limits. If this ballot question is approved to go before voters in November, the change to city code would only be allowed if voters approve a 4-percent sales tax on marijuana and marijuana products sold at retail stores in Brighton. City staff have estimated that approximately $1.5 million of marijuana sales tax could be collected per year. Revenue from this special sales tax would be used to fund capital projects, including recreational amenities (with no more than 20-percent of the revenues to be spent on administrative costs).

Under TABOR, in order for the City to impose the marijuana sales tax, voter approval is required from its citizens.

Presentations by staff will follow to help City Council finalize the regulatory framework for marijuana retail sales in the city. As part of this process, there will be public hearings in which residents and business owners can provide feedback and public comment. Dates of these public hearings will be released on the city’s website and social media.

The resolution passed tonight also approved the order of the names of candidates for City Council as they will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot. The names will appear as follows:
