[ARCHIVED] City Council votes to rescind mask requirement in city buildings and emergency declaration

COVID-FaceCoverings

On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, City Council voted 9-0 to rescind both the May 5, 2020 action to require masks in city-owned buildings and the March 2020 emergency declaration for the City of Brighton. Additionally, Council also voted to return to in-person City Council meetings and study sessions to begin on June 1.

The emergency declaration allowed the city to activate COVID-19 response and recovery plans and to effectively acquire and deploy federal, state and county resources to support the Brighton community. This followed Governor Jared Polis’ state of emergency declaration to help ensure COVID-19 resources were available to the state.

On May 5, 2020 City Council voted to strongly encourage residents to wear a face covering in public. In addition, all individuals over the age of two years old and without a disability were required to wear a face covering in all city buildings.

On May 14, 2021, Gov. Polis announced that vaccinated Coloradans can now go mask-free (unless the setting or business requires it). Current guidelines include no mask required for individuals who have been vaccinated (unless required by the setting) and continuing to wearing a mask indoors if unvaccinated. For schools and child care, masks are required unless a teacher, staff, or caregiver is vaccinated.
