[ARCHIVED] City of Brighton announces second round of Brighton Household Rent and Mortgage Assistance Grant

COVID_Assistance

The City of Brighton encourages residents to apply for its second round of the Brighton Household Rent and Mortgage Assistance Grant. Funding for the grant comes from the federal CARES Act and provides up to $3,000 in assistance for rent and mortgage payments to those who have faced significant negative financial impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant will be paid directly to the applicant’s landlord or lender.

To qualify for the Brighton Household Rent and Mortgage Assistance Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

● Be a resident of Brighton for one year or longer

● Demonstrate that you are experiencing difficulty paying your rent or mortgage due to the COVID-19 pandemic

● Be able to prove lawful presence in the United States

Receiving this grant could jeopardize your ability to continue to receive other federal funding sources, including the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8). Applicants who applied for and received funding in the first round of the Brighton Household Rent and Mortgage Assistance Grant are eligible to apply for additional funds so long as they still meet all the requirements.

These are federal funds passed through via the CARES Act and subject to federal reporting and eligibility requirements. This means applicants must have a valid tax identification number (social security number) to receive funding. Additionally, the City is required to issue a 1099 to a grantee and the grantee should consult their tax advisor about how to report this grant funding as part of their 2020 tax filing with the IRS and the State of Colorado.

Applications will be accepted until Dec. 14, 2020 or until funds run out, whichever is sooner. For more information and to apply, go to brightonco.gov/housinggrant (for first-time applicants) or www.brightonco.gov/secondround or www.brightonco.gov/secondround-spanish (for second-time applicants).

If you have questions, please contact Cindy Steele at csteele@brightonco.gov or 303-655-2276.
