Move It or Lose It! (Tues. May 26 @ 9:00 a.m.)

Improve leg strength and balance to keep you mobile. Increase upper body strength and improve your posture for great benefits. The class is designed to accommodate everyone. All exercises will be done seated, but they can be done standing if you prefer. Please have a good sturdy chair. Also be ready with 2 hand weights, or 2 full bottles of water, or 2 cans of food, and a dishtowel. Instructor: Rosalie Farrer.

Make your Garden Bird Friendly (Wed. May 27 @ 2:00 p.m.)

Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies to learn how to create an oasis in your own backyard or community garden that will not only benefit birds, but also pollinators, other wildlife, and you! What’s the Buzz on the Ridge? (Thurs. May 28 @ 2:00 p.m.)

The chefs at this school in Washington have implemented gardens for teaching students. Explore what they’ve done with beekeeping with honeybees, mason bees, and leafcutter bees. Take a tour of the school gardens, apiaries, and orchards. Learn how you can support these pollinators and in return how they can support your gardens. No Technology – No Problem: TV and Telephone Ideas for Fun:

The Alphabet Game

Running out of things to talk about with friends on the phone? Try playing one of the games you used to play to pass the time while traveling. For the Alphabet Game, pick a topic such as animals, countries, food, flowers, etc. Take turns going through the alphabet naming something from that category. Example: Anteater, Baboon, Cat… For a more competitive game: Start with the letter A and each player alternates naming something from the category until someone passes. Example: Anteater, Antelope, Aardvark . . . If you pass, your opponent gets one point. If the opponent can come up with another answer after you pass they get two points. Go to the next letter. The person with the most points wins. It might take several phone calls to finish the entire alphabet, but it is a fun way to challenge your brain.

Eliminate the root cause of many painful conditions with this easy to follow the plan from a neuromuscular therapist, yoga instructor, and pain specialist Lee Albert, who teaches five simple exercises to correct muscle imbalance.

Help Changing Smoke Detector Batteries:

Does your smoke alarm need a battery change? Brighton Fire will assist seniors and disabled residents of our community with battery changes to their smoke detectors if they cannot safely do so themselves.

• You MUST be the homeowner and reside in the home you are requesting a change at. (We CAN NOT provide this for renters, as that is the responsibility of the landlord)

• Please DO NOT call 911 for help with your smoke detector or for battery changes. A chirping smoke alarm will still continue to protect your home.

• In order to maintain the safety of our residents and firefighters, you will first be contacted and asked a few screening questions before sending a crew to your home.

• To schedule assistance email us at smokealarms@brightonfire.org. This email is monitored by several members of BFRD. Otherwise, call 303-659-4101. Please allow up to 48 hours for a crew member to contact you.

Platte Valley Medical Center Food Drive:

Platte Valley (1600 Prairie Center Parkway) is having a food drive over the next week and a drive-thru option on May 30th. The food and monetary donations will be distributed to the local Brighton Food Pantries. There is a big blue box outside the entrance to Medical Plaza 2 for people to drop off any non-perishable foods until May 29th. On Saturday, May 30th, they will be on-site for the drive-thru. They will take monetary donations and food items on that date from 9 am-12 noon. If people want to donate money, they can give cash or check made out to the food pantry of their choice. If you have any questions, contact Peggy Jarrett at 303-498-3590.  See the attached flyer at the bottom of this E-Blast for suggested food items.
