[ARCHIVED] City Council approves temporary reduction in water rates

utilities

In response to the COVID-19 disaster declaration and the significant financial impact to Brighton residents, City Council voted Tuesday night to temporarily reduce water rates, extend the deadline for payment, and suspend late fees through the month of June. Brighton utility customers will not receive a bill for the next several weeks but instead will see a combined single bill due in June incorporating these reduced rates. This applies to both residential and non-residential customers. Below are some important changes to your next utility bill:

  • The tier rate structure for April and May bills will be changed so that all customers are billed at the lowest tier pricing ($2.58 per 1,000 gallons), regardless of the amount of water consumed;
  • The fixed monthly service fees for the month of April will be reduced to $0;
  • Utility bills for April and May won’t be due until June; and
  • Late fees will be suspended through June 30.

Customers who on average use 5,000 gallons of water per month will see a savings of approximately $45 on their combined April/May bill. While customers will not have a bill due until June, payments may still be made monthly if preferred.

In addition to the rate reductions, City Council approved changes to Brighton’s Water Assistance Program to help residential customers who need temporary financial assistance to pay their water bill. Residents who qualify may receive up to a $300 credit on their water bill. Visit www.brightonco.gov/assistance to apply.
