In honor of Memorial Day, Elmwood and Fairview Cemeteries have some events for families to participate in on Sunday, May 27 and Monday, May 28.
On Sunday, May 27 all flags that have been accumulated through the on-site flag drop box at Elmwood Cemetery will be retired at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend and bring their own flags to add to the retirement pit.
On Monday, May 28 local Boy Scout troops will assist with displaying the Avenue of Flags. The flags will be up by 8 a.m. Elmwood and Fairview Cemeteries will also be honoring those who served in the Vietnam War. The public is invited to attend this dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at City Hall, 500 South 4th Street, at 11 a.m.
Elmwood and Fairview Cemeteries will both have flags at half-staff until noon on Monday, May 28. After that the flags will return to full staff.
All weekend long, there will be staff on hand to assist the public in finding loved ones.
Decorations placed the week of May 20 will be left on graves until the first Monday following the holiday, June 4. This allows families to place decorations on their loved ones graves for two weeks without it being removed. Cemetery staff has to remove decorations after that to continue with regular grounds maintenance.
