As the leaves change color, we are reminded that winter is coming. Now is the time to start prepping your landscape for cold weather. Check out some winterizing tips below.
- Winter watering should only be done by hand when air and soil temperatures are above 40°F with no snow cover.
- Spread a 3-4” layer of mulch around base of plants to help insulate for winter.
- Wrap the trunks of young trees to protect from frost and cold temperatures.
- Blow out your irrigation system. Upon cooling to 32°F, water expands and increases in volume as is turns to ice. The force behind this expansion is enough for pipes to burst and valves to crack. Contact your local landscape or irrigation companies for blow out services.
Preparing your landscape for colder temps helps to prevent costly repairs and will keep your landscape healthy.
Don’t forget! It will freeze sooner than you think. Winterize your irrigation system!
