The City of Brighton is underway with construction of a traffic signal at 136th and Sable; the anticipated completion of the signal is May 2017.
At the beginning of 2016, the City hired a consultant to perform an analysis of the current operational condition of the intersection as well as future conditions if a traffic signal were to be installed. The consultant reviewed the three options of: installing the signal under the current intersection configuration with no turn lanes, a signal with turn lanes for all legs of the intersection, and a signal with turn lanes just for Sable Boulevard. The analysis showed that based on the traffic movements through the intersection that the greatest improvement in operations would be seen by installing the traffic signal under the current lane configuration, without turn lanes.
The city is not reconfiguring the intersection or expanding the road outside the current right of way, although it is adding a little pavement and improving the drainage infrastructure at the northeast corner. Based on the analysis, there will be sufficient gaps for the left turning vehicles without causing significant delay to the through traffic.
